Our goal is simple: give dog owners answers they can trust. This page explains how we research, write and maintain the content on Can Dogs Get.

How we choose topics

We start from the questions dog owners are actually searching for, the everyday "Can dogs get…?" worries about illnesses, parasites, skin problems, behavior and food. Each topic is chosen because real people are looking for a clear answer to it.

How we research and write

• Every article leads with a direct, honest answer, then explains the symptoms, treatment, prevention and when to see a vet.
• We check our facts against trusted veterinary sources, including the American Kennel Club (AKC), VCA Animal Hospitals and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and we cite them on the page.
• We write in plain language and avoid overstating what is known. Where evidence is limited, we say so.
• Articles are written and edited by our team before they are published.

Accuracy and updates

We revisit articles periodically and when guidance changes. When we make a substantive change we update the "last updated" date on the page honestly, so you can see how current the information is.

Our sources

We prefer primary veterinary and animal-health authorities over second-hand summaries. Typical sources include the AKC, VCA Animal Hospitals, the AVMA, veterinary teaching hospitals and peer-reviewed research.
